WaterOne Coffer Dam
Johnson County

River Mile: 14.8     GPS:  N39.04693  W94.78641
River Left

Directions:
From I-70 take I-435 south, exit at Woodend Road north of the Kaw River Bridge. Park along Woodend Road just east of I-435. Hike in 1/4 mile on the west side of Peterbilt. A parking lot south of Woodend Road is planned.

Access Info:
AVOID THE LOW WATER NOTCH ON RIVER RIGHT NEAR THE SOUTH BANK. Do not attempt to float over the dam or through the water notch. Portage this dam on river left only. Access is on river left. The coffer dam is built down to bed rock and will stop the degradation of the Kaw River channel caused by the bed degradation on the Missouri River through Kansas City. Friends of the Kaw requested a portage path (shown below) when the dam was permitted.  This area is a popular fishing spot and white water kayakers like to play in the wave below the low water notch. Currents in this area are dangerous.

Float Info:
The next access is 14.8 miles downstream at Kaw Point at river mile 0 however a new access is under construction under the Turner Bridge at river mile 9. This access should be completed in the fall of 2011. First access upstream is Wilder Park Access at river mile 15.6.
