52 - Bowersock Dam

Bowersock Dam
Lawrence, Kansas

River Mile: 52.4     GPS:  N38.97527  W95.23541
THIS DAM SHOULD NOT BE RUN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Directions:
From I-70 take the east Lawrence exit #204 and follow U.S.59 south approximately 3 miles. Go under a railroad overpass and take the last left turn before the Kaw River Bridge onto Elm Street. Park on the south side of Elm Street and you may view the dam from the levee.

Access Info:
The dam is one mile below Burcham Park (river right and not recommended for use) and 1.7 mile below River Front Park (river left). Bowersock Mills and Power Company is constructing a new power house on the north end of the dam which when completed will include a portage path.  While the new power house is being constructed you will not be able to portage at this location.  You will need to take boats out at River Front Park above the dam and launch on the Kaw at the 8th Street Access Park. This will require a shuttle vehicle.

Float Info:
The first access is 1.4 mile downstream at the 8th Street Ramp. Boaters may paddle upstream from that access to the area below the dam easily. Boating within 200 yards of the dam is dangerous and not advised. The first access above the dam is River Front Park at river mile 54.1. Boating between this access and the dam is not recommended.
